Donor Expectations

Posted on September 8, 2026September 7, 2026 by Jason McNeal

What do donors expect as a result of their giving?

To answer this question, advancement professionals typically respond with a duality.  The first duality is the donor-focused aspect.  This response is focused on what the donor expects for themselves in response to their giving.  Responses like:  gratitude, recognition, special invitations, small gifts, etc.

The second aspect of this duality is focused on a mission-focused response.  This response concerns what the donor expects for others in response to their giving.  Responses like:  a more educated society, a healthier community, food for hungry people, etc.

If we want donors to donate again, we must address the first, “donor-focused” aspect of this duality.

However, motivating people to invest themselves, to become advocates, and to joyfully give more of their finances means we must address the second, “mission-focused” aspect of this duality.
