“Use the gift as you see fit,” is not the same as, “there is no need to tell me how my gift made a difference.”
“I won’t be able to make the event,” is not the same as, “I’m not interested in making a gift.”
“As a gift officer, he’s a warm and engaging guy,” is not the same as, “As a gift officer, he is very good at his job.”
It is amazing how we can regularly hear what donors say through of a lens of what makes our work easier or less inconvenient.
If we want to better understand how to exceed the expectations of our donors on important issues, we have to, first, pay attention to what they are not telling us.
