We know “we can’t step into the same river twice.”
Typically, we think about the river itself changing which makes it a different river over time. However, we also change over time and so we can’t step into the same river twice as well.
So many variables and complexities wrapped in this simple reminder.
Why, then, do many in our field believe that the purpose of professional development conferences is to learn what another institution is doing and copy it at our institution?
The point is not to try to step into the same river twice.
The point is to understand how the river is changing, how we are changing, and how best to take our next step thoughtfully.
