Strengthening Our Culture of Giving

Posted on July 17, 2026 by Jason McNeal

It’s not about the donors who support us having more wealth and greater financial capacity to give.

It’s not about the donors who support us having a stronger willingness to give.

It’s not about the donors who support us having a deepening sense of affinity for our cause.

It’s not about having more donors give (although this is a happy outcome).

And, it’s not even about asking more (although this is a pre-requisite).

If we want to strengthen our culture of giving, we must first hold two unshakeable beliefs:

  1. Our cause or mission is worthy and makes a significant difference in our world.  We must have more ego for our cause than we do for ourselves.
  2. Giving is deeply good, and right, and important for the wellbeing of individuals and communities.  We must be willing to bring the good news of giving to all.

Positive and life-giving cultures framed around giving don’t happen because our donors create them.

Stronger cultures of giving happen because we do.
