Assumptions

Posted on September 8, 2025 by Jason McNeal

I believe our work is to get money from people.

Versus, I believe our work is to invite and encourage people to experience the goodness of giving.

I believe most people will only do what is in their interests.

Versus, I believe most people want to help others.

I believe wealthy people are selfish and stingy.

Versus, I believe a person’s financial status is unrelated to how selfish and stingy, or how compassionate and generous they behave.

The assumptions we bring to our work (and to life) frame and influence our experiences.

We can assume the negative and miss or subdue life-changing opportunities to help generosity, compassion, and kindness emerge.

Or we can assume the positive until proven otherwise.

The genius behind the quote from Roots author, Alex Haley, “Find the good and praise it,” is not that it helps reinforce good deeds done by others.  It’s that it changes us.
