Most people work in the tactical realm. To-do lists. Deadlines. Budgets.
Some people lift their heads up and work in the strategy realm. Planning. Considering opportunities, strengths, and weaknesses. Coordinating tactics.
But few people pause to work in the generative realm. Distinguishing which questions are most important to be asking and answering. Identifying institutional values. Clarifying institutional purpose.
If we want to be successful in the tactical realm over long periods of time, we must lift up our collective heads to work in the strategy realm. And, importantly, we also have to give ourselves time to pause and consider our work in the generative realm.
“20/20/60” simply represents the ballpark percentages of our work time we should be spending in the generative, strategic, and tactical realms respectively.
We may be working harder than ever, but are we dividing that work into the right realms and for the right amounts of time?
