Conventional wisdom is that we must evoke a sense of care, empathy, or concern in order to persuade people to give. So, we spend a lot of time and energy coming up with compelling stories. Clearly, many people will give once their “heart-strings are pulled.”
But, the reverse process is also true. When people give – from whatever motivation and at whatever amount – they will begin to feel more care, more empathy, and more concern for whatever they just supported.
An important reminder during this Season of Giving.
If we want people to feel closer to our mission, to become more zealous for our cause, and to grow in their sense of ownership for our success, make sure to clearly invite them to give.
Our purpose is to help others feel that our mission is worth supporting. Sometimes, we achieve that purpose best by simply and straightforwardly, inviting their gift.
