As nonprofit leader, its important to keep in mind that advancement is not the same as philanthropy.
We can get so focused on raising charitable gifts that we forget the real outcome we seek – namely, to advance the mission of our organization.
Engaged volunteers help advance our mission.
Aligned sponsors help advance our mission.
Strategic planning helps advance our mission.
Thoughtful communications help advance our mission.
And, yes, philanthropy, or fundraising, helps advance our mission.
But philanthropy is only a slice of the advancement pie.
As a leader, asking “will it significantly advance our mission?” is far more important and helpful, than asking, “will people give significantly to support it?”
