“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” — John Quincy Adams

Most folk who work with donors think of themselves as “development officers” first and “philanthropic leaders” almost never. I have become convinced, though, that capably serving in the field of development and philanthropy requires mastering the leadership art form.

How effectively are you inspiring donors to “dream more, learn more, do more and become more,” as JQA said? Can you more regularly encourage donors to dream bigger about their giving and how they can transform the lives of those you serve?

These are not inconsequential questions.

I believe, as I know many of you do, that meaningful giving is a key component of a healthy, satisfying, adult life. We grow and become better people when we give. What, then, will you do in 2010 to inspire and give such life enhancing opportunities to donors?

Donors give our organizations many things of great value – their time, talent, and treasure. But we have the opportunity to lead our donors. And when we lead well, we offer our donors the real gift of philanthropy: the opportunity to become the very best version of themselves.

May you, your loved ones, and your organization have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
